About the Role:
The Oxford School of Global and Area Studies, University of Oxford, is seeking to appoint a Researcher in Middle East Politics to work on a project, led by Dr Neil Ketchley, collecting historical statistical data from the Arabic-speaking Middle East and North Africa (MENA). The project will also involve working with Professor Charles Kurzman at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the Arab Council for Social Sciences (ACSS). The post is full-time and fixed term for 18 months and may be subject to renewal, and is offered from 1st September 2023, or as soon as possible thereafter.
The successful candidate will be responsible for identifying, collecting, and digitizing historical data (e.g. censuses, statistical handbooks, maps, etc.) from the MENA to be made publicly available via the ACSS Dataverse (https://dataverse.theacss.org/).
About You:
We welcome applications from early career researchers who have completed a first degree and/or a PhD/DPhil in a relevant subject area, with experience of collecting data from the MENA region. You will be someone who thrives in a collaborative environment, and you will have a commitment to open science and the public dissemination of data. The ideal candidate will use the data collected to advance their own research agenda. Knowledge of Arabic-language OCR engines and the R/Python programming languages is desirable, although training can be provided.
